Ophthalmology

Am currently in the middle of my Ophthalmology posting at TTSH. Daily activities involve clinic hopping with Shaun, peering into eyes with the direct ophthalmoscope, desperately trying to locate the optic disc and other structures. Short postings have been fun and relatively slack, even if it means trying to learn as much as we can about the topic in a measly 2 weeks.

We met the doctor on Wednesday morning to have an extra session on the slit lamp. I really loved the look of the retina crypts, and how they changed shape as his pupil dilated and constricted, when I looked through the buddy lens at Shaun’s eye. On Friday, in the OT, I got the chance to scrub in with my doctor, and look at the surgery going on (cataracts, with retina hooks) through the extremely sharp Carl Zeiss lens. It was possible to identify the individual layers that were being worked on, and when the cataract was finally blasted away by the ultrasound, I was again struck by the beauty and clarity of the lensless eye through the magnifying scope.

I did this picture on a whim, thinking about my experiences in the past week. I know that Asian eyes aren’t blue, but I liked how the blue accentuated the retinal crypts, just as I remembered them.
